Samara Haver

Position: Graduate Research Assistant, Ph.D candidate

Year hired:

Development of hard- and software tools for bioacoustics research; marine mammal acoustics; Wildlife Science

Research: I studied psychology and neuroscience as an undergraduate at Colorado College. As a junior, I spent a semester off campus with Sea Education Association (SEA), where I learned to love tall ship sailing and marine biology. After graduation I moved to Woods Hole, MA to pursue marine science, working first for SEA and then for the NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center. At NOAA I was introduced to marine bioacoustics and worked under Dr. Sofie Van Parijs in the Protected Species Branch passive acoustics research group. These days I am a graduate student in Wildlife Science at Oregon State University. I completed my master’s research in the Oregon State University Research Collective for Applied Acoustics (ORCAA) advised by Dr. Holger Klinck in 2017. I am now a Ph.D. student and NOAA Dr. Nancy Foster Scholar. My dissertation research focuses on soundscapes and ocean noise within U.S. waters. My data comes from the NOAA/NPS Noise Reference Station Network.
